Renteach Marketplace: Building Scalable Web Platforms

RentEach started with a familiar marketplace promise: list what you own, rent what you need. The complexity hid in the details. A car listing needs mileage and fuel type. Studio gear needs hourly rates and equipment bundles. Event rentals need date ranges and deposit rules. One form could not serve all of them without feeling like a tax return.

Architecture that survives feature creep

We chose a Turborepo monorepo: consumer marketplace, owner dashboards, and admin operations in one repo with shared types. tRPC on Drizzle and Postgres keeps API contracts honest. Better Auth handles sessions and OAuth. Cloudinary and R2 store listing media. The stack is modern, but the product decision that mattered most was simpler: every listing type gets its own creation flow with shared patterns, not one mega form.

Discovery without winner take all listings

Marketplaces die when the same three listings dominate the homepage. We built a smart balanced discovery algorithm that distributes visibility across categories so new owners get a fair shot. Wishlists, rental duration calculators, and map integrated location picking round out the renter side without cluttering the first visit.

Bookings, bundles, and the messy middle

A rental is not a shopping cart. It is a request, an acceptance, a handoff, a return, and sometimes a dispute. We modeled the full lifecycle with status tracking on both renter and owner dashboards. Bundle checkout lets someone rent a camera, lenses, and lighting from one owner in a single flow, which sounds obvious until you try to reconcile availability across variants.
